As far as we know, you'll only be able to extend another network using wireless if it has been provided by. Unfortunately, the information that you received was not correct. Apples 'extend' feature will only work if you have another Apple router providing the wireless signal to be extended. but in either case, the AirPort cannot wirelessly extend a signal from a third party (non-Apple) wireless router. Can it be done & how (running an ethernet cable isn't an option). Not sure whether an 'AEx' is an Airport Express, or an AirPort Extreme. Gear from companies like Google and Apple won't let you do that they will only (directly/wirelessly) extend Wi-Fi networks of their own products. Basically, what youre looking to do is connect via the Ethernet ports one or more AirPort (Express, Extreme, or Capsule) to an existing router or gateway. If wiring via ethernet isn't possible look at another possible location that you can actually wire an additional AP to, or doing AV2 homeplugs (ethernet over power lines) or MoCA or some other solution that uses wires you already have, or even a true wifi repeater (again you'll get reduced performance due to the added hops, but a reduced 150-300Mb/s N connection is a lot better than a 54Mb/s G connection. The Apple store said it could be done (I know the Airport Express will only extend Apple networks). If you want to extend an Xfinity Wi-Fi network with just one device, wirelessly, you need to buy something from a company that makes gear that allows you to do that, such as Netgear, Belkin, or Dlink. Apple has an excellent support document - Wi-Fi base stations: Extending the range of your wireless network by adding additional Wi-Fi base stations. I run an AP express wired to my RT-N66U with no problems. Even when given ability to setup WDS, it's never a given that it will actually run well (or at all) between different manufacturers.Īpple stuff has different proprietary mojo that enables it to wirelessly extend/repeat the signals of Apple routers even using WPA2 and 802.11n and beyond, but you don't have an Apple base station so that doesn't do you any favors. Enjoy low warehouse prices on name-brand Routers, Wifi Extenders & Modems products. With ver 6.x of the setup utility those options are gone, and Mavericks now refuses to run ver 5.x (whereas Mountain Lion would allow running both/either of the setup utilities).īut, ya, either way you probably don't want WDS, IIRC it forces WEP & 802.11g only, and half its bandwidth will be committed just to bouncing traffic back and forth, which probably will slow down your main router in its communications with other, faster devices. Find a great collection of Routers, Wifi Extenders & Modems at Costco. □ So I can watch netflix don't you know. You used to be able to fiddle around more with Apple router hardware when they still allowed the old ver 5.x setup utility, and there were hidden options to enable things like WDS (hold down the option key on pull down menus and you would get the larger list of options). It works quite well and I can block google public DNS servers. not all the time) so due to my poor ISP, I use bridged adsl modem-Router running PPPoE client-Apple router in Static IP mode-Wireless Extend to other Apple routers. If you need further help with this just ask. To route you need to setup the Asus as your main router and then plug in one Apple router as WAP and you can then extend your other apple routers.īy using the asus you will then have control over the routing as well as still using the apple to wireless extend. Just to add you generally cannot do static routes in a wireless extender. Just wonder, will it work as wireless solution to my issue?īob, sorry i miss answering your other question. I came across this article in the discussion forum is talking about how to use Non-Apple router and use Airport extreme or express as range extenders. Enter a new name for the extended AirPort. Plug the other end into the WAN port on the Airport you want to use to extend the network. I wanted to use Asus router because it has added functions like static routes, etc, which unfortunately Apple router does not have at all. Plug an Ethernet cable into an available LAN port on the original Airport Router. I presently own Airport Extreme (router), and Airport Express (range extender). Looks like Apple routers really is proprietary (****!) - doesn't work well with other routers. You could always put your ISP router in bridge mode and use the Airport Extreme as your router and WIFI. Bob and LaPastenague, thanks very much for the info.
